Dear readers, well back to our appointment! There V7 version of Midjourney He is carrying with him numerous interesting news and continuous updates. Today I want to talk to you about another function recently introduced and that I am starting a experiment with particular curiosity: it is the parameter Experimental –Exp.
It is a tool that can prove to be very useful both in the phase of creationand when we want Add character and depth to our final output. As always, my approach is to understand if these news can really integrate in a practical way In the daily work of those who deal with image, design or visual design.

What the parameter does –exp
The parameter -exp (abbreviation of Experimental) allows you to increase the level of expressiveness And visual wealth of the image. Adding – EXP to the end of our prompt, with a value from 1 to 100we can influence different aspects of rendering:
- improvement of details In specific areas such as faces, textures and materials
- use of more experimental techniques in the management of lights and shadows
- a different stylistic interpretation in the use of color and construction of the scene
In practice, it is like applying a real creative filtercapable of pushing the image towards a more result editorial, cinematographic or artistic.
How to use – EXP
It’s very simple: that’s enough Add the parameter to the end of the promptfor example: –Exp x (where the X stands for a numerical value between 1 and 100). The higher the value, the more marked the effect.
It should be borne in mind that Not all prompt react in the same way: scenes with movement, portraitsimages related to fashion or dynamic photographyscenes with complex textures or with strong play of light They tend to benefit more than the use of –EXP.
Practical example: from the test to comparison
To better understand how this parameter behaves, I made a small one as usual example on a dynamic subject: a woman who jogging in a park, photographed laterally with a slight motion blur (to create a more authentic movement effect). The subject wears wire headphones, and is designed for a shot inspired by fashion campaigns with a magazine cut.
Set 1 – prompt without the use of the parameter –EXP
In the first set, the image is already very good, but more standard: the movement is there, but the blur is a little flat, the faces are less carved and the light has a more neutral character:
Set 2 – Prompt with use of the parameter –EXP 50
The jump is evident: the movement is much more “true”, the details are richer, the light is more interesting, the atmosphere becomes closer to an editorial shot. The subject appears more physical, more present:

Set 3 – Prompt with use of the parameter –EXP 100
The effect becomes much more artistic and interpretative: the movement is extreme, the colors become more saturated, the most pronounced blur. Perfect for a Fashion Magazine look or a very creative visual communication project:

What to keep in mind
As always, not everything is perfect:
- It is necessary to test the right value (not always -exp 100 is the best choice: often between –EXP 30 and –EXP 50 The best balance is obtained);
- In some cases, The effect can make the image less “controllable” – more suitable for artistic use than to precision commercial works;
- requires a little Experimentation on prompt to find the ideal balance.

In summary, –Exp is a parameter that opens new creative possibilities: allows us to work on the expressiveness of the image, the atmosphere and on the textures more dynamicly. It is not a command to always use, but in certain phases of the creative pipeline – or to give a unique touch to the final result – it can really make a difference.
See you soon, with new tests! In the coming weeks I will continue to experiment as always with Midjourney, trying to share with you New tools, practical tests and scenarios of use To better integrate the AI in visual and design work.
The weekly section “Architectural Prompting” is curated by the experts Luciana Mastrolia, Giovanna Panucci and Andrea Tinazzo
