Venice, living laboratory of sustainable architecture

In a year in which the Central pavilion of the gardens is in renovationVenice itself becomes a living laboratory. The lagoon city, vulnerable symbol of climate changeit houses experimental installations and widespread prototypes, highlighting the importance of collaboration between disciplines and different “intelligences” to face a reality in constant evolution.

The curatorial approach of the Biennale, directed by Carlo Ratti, is characterized by the exceptional Opening to multidisciplinarity. Architects, engineers, designers, philosophers, artists and many other professionals have collaborated together to redefine the very concept of authority in architecture, proposing an inclusive and intergenerational model.

Furthermore, this year’s Biennale is part of a wider international contextcollaborating with reality such as the United Nations Cop30 in Belem, the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and the Baukultur Alliance of Davos, strengthening the link between architecture, sustainability and global policies.

Also the theme of circularity and of the sustainability environmental is at the center of the event, with the aim of obtaining the carbon neutrality certificationfollowing the circular economy manifesto promoted by Carlo Ratti together with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. The 2025 architecture biennial thus becomes an opportunity to transform the way we think and build our future, with Venice as a living laboratory of innovative solutions and bold visions.

Italian Pavilion 2025: Terræ aquærethink the border between land and sea

In this international context the Italian pavilionto the Arsenale, which this year is titled Terræ aquæ. Italy and the intelligence of the sea. Under the curatorial guidance of the architect Guendalina SalimeiThe exhibition focuses on the intimate relationship that binds Italy to the sea, proposing a Mediterranean enlarged to the nearby oceans and reflecting on the need to adapt to new environmental, economic and cultural needs.

The proposal of the Italian Pavilion – presented on 14 March in Rome – is clear: it is necessary to rethink the Italian coasts with sustainable and integrated projectsenhancing the natural and cultural heritage, in a perspective of adaptation to global challenges such as climate change and socio-economic transformations. The sea becomes an essential element not only from a geographical point of view, but also cultural and design.

As stated by the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, Venice represents the ideal place to reflect on the sea, the place where Italy has historically expressed its maximum beauty and wisdom. According to the general manager Angelo Piero Cappello, the dialogue between land and water, in the center of Italian participation, today takes on a crucial value for a future that requires new solutions, capable of integrating environmental, social and economic dimensions.

From tradition to vision of the future: an intergenerational path

The project edited by Salimei focuses on a Innovative approach that collects visions, searches and installationsstimulating collective intelligence that involves different generations and professionalism. The public call has collected proposals that range from urban regeneration projects to speculative visions, showing how the border between earth and water is a dynamic testing.

The exhibition, articulated between concrete projects and innovative visions, recalls the environmental liabilityby proposing strategies to deal with specific problems such as coastal erosion, the redevelopment of waterfront and the conservation of the submerged heritage. The goal is to create new urban and community centrality, overcoming physical and symbolic barriers between land and sea.

Parallel to the exhibition, the Italian Pavilion proposes an articulated public program entitled The sea of intelligence. Dialogueswhich provides Workshops, seminars and conferences. In this way, Venice becomes a place of international confrontation, not only exhibition but also of dialogue and cultural exchange.
