A “widespread Congress”

Angelo Domenico PerriniPresident of the National Council of Engineers (CNI), underlines the importance of the Congress as a moment of reflection on the vision of the professional category. The goal is to understand whether engineers will be able to anticipate and address major turning points. Even if definitive solutions are not reached, the Congress will be an opportunity to dissect problems and outline shared guidelines.

Francesco GaudiniPresident of the Order of Engineers of Siena, describes the organization of the Congress as a privilege for a provincial order. The peculiarity of this year is the “Widespread Congress”located in more places iconic buildings of the city and will also be open to civil society, with events that deal with topics of wider interest than just the engineering world.

Second Enrico RomualdiPresident of the Order of Engineers of Grosseto, the 2024 Congress will represent a turning point in congressional organisations. The two orders involved, Siena and Grossetowill share an event that stands out for its originality compared to the past. The occasion will be useful to affirm the need to understand and govern the changes taking place in society.

The program

The program of the 68th National Congress was designed to define the general framework and some address lines that allow the professional category of engineers to maintain its competitiveness.

It is thought of as a container divided into two parts: debates and updates on current issues and technical issues which concern the profession and the many changes taking place; discussion between the delegates aimed at concretely identifying what and how the order system should do to effectively represent the figure of the engineer.

As regards the debates, they will be developed through the presence of experts or the storytelling of experiences in the engineering field.

Wednesday 2 October will be dedicated in particular to a reflection on how the Italian engineering system is changing and enriching itself with skills, with a focus on information engineering, aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering and on a multiplicity of related aspects at new frontiers induced by artificial intelligence.

Thursday 3 October the debate modules, with the presence of experts not only from engineering backgrounds, will focus on some themes or rather “turning points” capable of influencing, growing and evolving the engineering sector: from green houses to the practices of urban regenerationfrom the recent Transition Plan 5.0 to the new directions of machine learning specific to industrial engineering, up to a debate on the directions of artificial intelligence for the use and consumption of professionals.

Among the numerous guests and speakers, it is worth mentioning the presence of Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeciwhich, also in light of recent climate events, will focus on the policies and methods of intervention for the protection of the territory. It will also be present Guido Castelli, Extraordinary Commissioner for the 2016 Central Italy Earthquakewhich will illustrate the strategic aspects of the connection between reconstruction and regeneration. Fabrizio Curcio, former Head of Civil Protectionwill hold a lecture on engineering to govern competitiveness. The discussion between the delegates on the issues concerning the operation of the order system will take place on Thursday 3 October afternoon, following a participatory discussion methodology defined as Open Space Focus group.

The big news of this Tuscan edition will be represented by Out of Congress. This is an afternoon appendix to the normal conference activities, aimed at exploring the main current issues related to engineering, involving, in addition to the delegates, the citizens of Siena. Using informative language, rather complex issues related to artificial intelligence, robotics, biomedical engineering, structural engineering and the recovery of architectural heritage will be discussed. The objective is not only to highlight the many evolutions (turning points) that engineering is undergoing at the moment, but also the many faces of engineering and its ability to improve the lives of each of us.
