A new module dedicated to masonry arches and vaults

The continuous updating of the application has led to the development of the new Mapei Structural Design module dedicated to masonry arches and vaults, which allows the sizing and verification of the reinforcement created with FRP, FRCM and CRM systems.

Solutions for the reinforcement of masonry arches and vaults

The solutions that Mapei makes available within Mapei Structural Design include FRP systems, made up of carbon or glass fiber fabrics impregnated and applied using specific cycles of epoxy resins, and FRCM systems, based on fibre-reinforced mortars, both cementitious and cement-free.

The latter are also particularly suitable for interventions on structures subject to restrictions by the Superintendency, thanks to their compatibility with historical supports. The FRCM systems are composed by combining high-performance glass, basalt or carbon fiber mesh with the mortars, and are applied with indicative thicknesses of approximately 10 mm.

Alongside these solutions, CRM systems are also available, composed of fibre-reinforced mortars – also in the cement or cement-free version – combined with alkali-resistant glass fiber meshes, with an application thickness of approximately 30 mm.

Structural checks and calculation results

The module dedicated to arches and vaults allows you to carry out local checks considering uniformly distributed vertical static loads, applicable sometimes to barrel or depressed vaults and to round or depressed arches.

The software returns the pre- and post-intervention checks, with particular attention to the main sections of the curvilinear element – shutters, kidneys and key – evaluated in terms of resistance to compression, shear and pressure-bending.

To facilitate the reading of the results, the program also provides the representation of the diagrams of the stress pressure lines (normal stress, shear and bending moment), as well as the trend of the stresses at the intrados and extrados.

Operational support and documentation for designers

The tool allows the designer to quickly evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen reinforcement intervention, taking into account the geometry of the element, the mechanical characteristics of the existing masonry, the load conditions and the possibility of applying the reinforcement to the intrados and/or extrados.

With the latest version it is also possible to directly download the reinforcement sheets for arches and vaults in the three available technologies, in editable PDF or DWG format. This functionality, integrated with Mapei PRO’s Price Analysis and Specification Items, completes the documentation package available to designers.

As with the other Mapei Structural Design modules, in this case too it is possible to generate and download the calculation report in editable format and save the project in your reserved area.
