Emma Potter

The POROTON® fire walls they are a safe and efficient solution for the construction of fire-resistant buildings. The Poroton Italia® Consortium has updated the technical documentation on these elements, offering detailed information on resistance and reaction to fire in compliance with current regulations. POROTON® walls guarantee high fire safety, thermal insulation and sustainability.

Let’s analyze it in detail below.

Fire reaction class “Euroclass A1”

There reaction to fire it’s one passive protection fire measure which manifests its effects in the initial fire propagation phase, with the aim of limiting the ignition of materials and reducing the spread of the fire itself.

There fire reaction classwhich distinguishes the different products, therefore provides a judgment on the material’s ability to contribute to the fire load or not.

As explained in the technical documentation, i POROTON® products belong to fire reaction class “Euroclass A1” possessing all the requirements prescribed to be part of it. This classification, which means that the material makes no contribution to the fireautomatically entails exemption from any obligation for testing and/or approvals of any kind. They are therefore incombustibledo not contribute in any way to the fire load and do not emit toxic fumes and/or gases.

Fire resistance of POROTON® products

There fire resistance represents a fundamental passive protection measure to guarantee, in fire conditions, an appropriate level of construction safety.

The POROTON® Italia Consortium has always reserved great attention to the fire resistance performance of POROTON® brand products and for this reason it has constantly updated the certifications of the proposed construction solutions, to provide tools and concrete support to technicians and designers working in the field of fire prevention.

During the fire the walls in POROTON®:

  • they do not contribute in any way to the fire load;
  • they keep their insulating power unchanged;
  • they do not emit fumes or toxic gases.

The fire behavior of a brick wall is strongly influenced by the thermal inertia factor.

POROTON® walls are equipped with notable thermal inertia and, if compared with walls made of normal brick elements, they certainly present better fire behavior.

Fire resistance certification of POROTON® walls

The POROTON® Italia Consortium and the producers associated with it who have the “Classification Report” or of “Extended application report of fire resistance test results” referring to their products or construction elements, they can provide the qualified technician with the documentation required by current legislation to carry out fire prevention practices.

The complete article contains two tables which summarize schematically in relation to different certification methods provided for by the Ministerial Decree 16.2.2007 and by the Ministerial Decree 3.8.2015 and subsequent amendments, to the field of use (non-load-bearing separation wall or load-bearing wall) and to the updated documentation in possession of the POROTON® Italia Consortium and its associated companies, the performances to the fire of the different types of POROTON® masonry.

Conclusions

The new updated technical documentation on the fire behavior of POROTON® walls confirms that POROTON® products are one safe and efficient solution for the construction of fire resistant buildings.

POROTON® walls offer numerous advantages in terms of fire resistance, thermal insulation, acoustic insulation and sustainability.
