In April 2024 the request for integration of the documentation
We remind you that the VIA – SEA Commission of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the Ministry of Culture (MIC) had requested supplementary documentation for the Messina Strait Bridge project which involved an extensive design update with 239 requests from MASE and 11 from MIC.
According to what was reported on the Strait of Messina website, this led to the revision of over 800 project documentsalso anticipating some studies planned for the executive project. The additions include updated studies and modeling, specific insights and responses to comments from the public and associations.
Among the main focuses, the MASE and the MIC have requested further field investigationsincluding terrestrial, bathymetric and underwater faunal surveysto ensure respect for the ecosystems involved. The Strait of Messina company worked with a multidisciplinary team of national and international experts.
According to the CEO, the Environmental Monitoring Plan, implemented before, during and after the works, will be essential to verify the effectiveness of the sustainability and environmental mitigation measures adopted.
The narrow bridge of Messina and seismic safety
About the seismic safetythe Messina Stretto Bridge project is the subject of studies conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the La Sapienza University of Rome.
INGV experts have provided support since 2011 for the framework geoseismotectonicthrough field surveys and geoseismic prospecting.
The development of the definitive project was conducted with the support of various specialized entities, such as Eurolink (a consortium including Webuild and other global suspension bridge experts) e Parsons Transportation Group. Edison Next provided environmental monitoring, while a Expert Panel supported checks on aerodynamics-aeroelastic, seismic, geotechnical and environmental aspects.
Planned next steps
The next steps take theapproval by CIPESS of the definitive project to start the executive phase.
It is hypothesized thatstart of works by the end of 2024 and thestart of demolition by mid-year 2025.
The opening to traffic is estimated for 2032.
